Dog Profile : Blue Nose Pitbull

The blue nose pitbull is a rare breed of dog that is much sought after by some dog lovers. Due to the lack of supply and high demand, they are very expensive. It is not uncommon to have to make a down payment exceeding $2,000 to get on a list to purchase this breed of dog. Afterwards, the prospective owner must wait until it has been bred.

The exact origin of the blue nose pitbull is uncertain. However, it is known that they are a result of a genetic defect that occurs as a result of interbreeding. The genetic byproduct rarely occurs, even if a breeder uses a male and female blue nose pitbull during the breeding process. One of the first identified cases of one of these dogs is in Ireland in the 1800s with breeders who were interbreeding pitbulls. Blue nose pitbulls were found to be more common in later generations of dogs that had been interbred for many decades.

Due to generations of interbreeding, blue nose pitbulls tend to have genetic disorders, some of which may have a significant effect on behavior. Most are very rowdy and energetic. However, the temperament is grossly affected by the environment that the dog lives in. Owners who treat their blue nose pitbull with care are much less likely to have any problems with aggressive behavior from their dog than an owner who is neglectful or abuses their dog.

Blue nose pitbulls tend to be very loyal to their owners and anyone else who resides in the home. They are known to be very protective of their owners and property when it comes to other dogs. Even though human aggresiveness is rare, many areas do not allow residents to own dogs of this breed, even if their specific blue nose pitbull is well-behaved.

Pitbulls of any breed, including the blue nose type, have a poor reputation that is likely perpetuated by movies, television shows and the media in general. Due to the very low population of this specific line, statistics are not available for the incident rates for this specific breed. However, given that blue nose pitbulls exhibit many of the same characteristics of other breeds of pitbulls, it is likely that they also have relatively high rates of aggressive behavior towards other dogs if not trained properly.
